A tribute to Louise
When I first started looking at my family history I noticed the little girl who died just before she turned two. I always felt sad when I would look at her birth and death dates. Louise Sophie Kirchner was my great aunt.
Louise Sophie Kirchner was born on the 11th July 1896, most likely at the family home at Kent's Pocket, Boonah. The area at the time was called Coochin, Fassifern as can be seen on the birth certificate below. Louise was the tenth child and my grandfather Gustav Ernst Kirchner was just two years old at the time.
In June 1898 (Winter time in Australia) Louise became sick and according to her death certificate she was sick for three weeks. Doctor Cameron attended to her on the 29th June 1898 but sadly she didn't recover and died on the 9th July 1898, just two days before her 2nd birthday. The death certificate states she died from acute pneumonia, meningitis and cerebral exhaustion. It must have been such a sad time for the whole family.
I once asked if there was a grave and my mum said she may have been buried in the garden at the Kirchner farm because she remembered there was a certain place she wasn't allowed near as she was growing up. It turned out Louise was buried in the Hoya Lutheran Cemetery. We visited the cemetery and found her grave. I have included the photo from the South-East Queensland cemeteries headstone photo collection website because it is a lot cleaner than the one I have.
One day I was looking through some of the old papers that we've kept and saw one with a date that really stood out. I realised I was looking at the receipt for Louise's funeral. It was from W.H. Abell who was the undertaker at the time. It seems this receipt was always kept in a tin in the Kirchner family home. I am the fourth generation to take care of it. I feel quite privileged and so it shall continue to be preserved and cherished. A little memento to remember one so young, a connection to a little girl who died so long ago.
It may not be much but this is my little tribute to Louise Sophie Kirchner (1896 - 1898), a little girl who died so young but is still remembered.
Go to the Kirchner Family page for more information on the family.
I enjoy researching history and families, it's an all encompassing hobby that takes over a lot of my spare time.
